World’s Largest Jade Buddha in Penang

The World’s Largest Gem Quality Jade Buddha will be coming to Penang Times Square, Jalan Dato Kramat from 6th April, 2013 to 14th April, 2013.

This unique statue was carved from a rare single 18-tonne boulder of Polar Jade that was discovered in Canada in 2000. It is modeled after the famous Shakyamuni Buddha statue in Bodhygaya, recognized by all Buddhists to be the place of the Buddha’s Enlightenment. The Buddha has been named the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace in the belief that this Buddha will inspire all beings to follow the peaceful path.

The rare and magnificent 2.7 meter tall statue of the Jade Buddha weighing 4 tonnes represents Universal Peace and has an estimated worth of US$5 million.

The purpose of exhibiting around the world is to enable people from all walks of life, regardless of race, language or religion to view this magnificent symbol of peace and compassion. The Jade Buddha will inspire everyone who sees it to find peace. Since early 2009, the Jade Buddha has been exhibited around the world in countries like Vietnam, Australia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, the United States and across Europe. Nearly 7 million people have already seen this magnificent statue and Penang will be the 66th city that the Jade Buddha will be exhibited.

The opening ceremony to be graced by Chief Minister Mr Lim Guan Eng on 6th April, 3pm at the Penang Times Square, and witnessed by Chief Monks representing the three Buddhist traditions: Theravada, Sutrayana and Vajrayana.
