Time: 8.30 – 9.30pm
This Saturday, millions of people all over the world will switch off
their lights to show support for Earth Hour, a global campaign by World
Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to raise awareness on climate change. The
campaign was first launched in Sydney in 2007 and since then has been an
annual movement to reduce energy consumption. Penangites and
organisations in Penang are urged to participate in this movement and to
spread the message to friends and family so that more people will be
aware of issues regarding climate change and global warming.
In fact, a few organisations have already jumped on the bandwagon by
taking part in this global movement. Auto-City Penang will be working
together with the Penang State Advisory Committee on Women, Family &
Community Development as well as Jit Sin Independent School to switch
off non-essential lights at all their Food and Beverage outlets from
8.30 to 9.30pm for a one-hour candle lighting dinner. Furthermore, there
will be shows like the Chinese 24 Drums and flash mobs starting from
8.00pm. Performances will be at the Auto-City lover’s bridge, opposite
Starbucks Coffee. For more information, call Auto-City at 04-5011222.
This Saturday, Queensbay Mall will be joining fans, cyclers and
mall-goers to show their commitment in protecting our planet, together
with celebrity host Jojo Struys. Queensbay Mall is making a pledge with a
promise-and-challenge fundraising campaign whereby a donation of
RM5,000 is promised to St Nicholas Home for the Blind if 500 cyclists
participate in the “We Will If You Will” Earth Hour Ride 2013. This
campaign is organised to accommodate the rising interest in cycling and
is also in-line with the state government’s efforts to make Penang the
most environmentally sound and liveable city in Malaysia. The 6.5km
family-friendly ride will start and end at Queensbay Mall, Penang.
Non-essential lights will also be switched off to mark the start of the
Earth Hour Ride 2013 followed by stage performances to keep the crowd
entertained while anticipating the return of the cyclists. The Earth
Hour Ride 2013 is free and open to the public with no registration
required. For more information, call Queensbay Mall at 04-6198989.
